10 causes of damp in walls

  • Arredamento :

See mould and stains on the walls, plaster and paint that flakes with halos of moisture are signs of an unhealthy environment.

If these problems occur, it is necessary to look for the cause by analysing the wall to solve the problem by considering a recovery program in several phases.

The main causes that can lead to having problems are:

1) Rising damp

2) Hygroscopic humidity (materials that absorb moisture from the air)

3) Moisture content of condensation

4) Residual moisture from construction work

5) Rising humidity from underground foundations

6) Infiltration caused by walls in touch with the soil

7) Above ground infiltration

8) Pressure water infiltration (groundwater)

9) Infiltration by electrical, chemical or physical factors

10) Hydraulic breakage

One of the most frequent factors is the rising humidity that transports the mineral salts into the walls and plaster that, by absorbing the air’s humidity, retain it in the wall itself. The stain appears to decrease from the bottom upwards. In this case, it is necessary to use a type of plaster and anti-sales compatible with the salts present in it. The anti-sales block the formation of salts, and the use of a breathable plaster evaporates moisture because transpirable. Once this cycle is done, you can paint the wall with also transpiring paints.

In the phenomena of condensation on the surface or inside the wall, you have to use plaster, anti-sales and anti-mould products.

If the infiltration comes from the outside, the outside partition must be waterproofed.

If the humidity is hygroscopic, an injection product must be used in the wall.

No product can be suitable for all moisture cases, so it is advisable to look for the cause of the problem to block it. It is not enough to cover the stain using breathable paint; otherwise, the problem recurs.
